FAQ

Lighting questions.

Can you design the lighting for a whole renovation?

Yes — we plan the full scheme room by room, layering ambient, task and feature lighting with the right dimming and switching, then install and certify it.

Do you fit smart lighting?

We install smart dimming, scene control and app-based systems, set up and demonstrated before we leave.

Can you hang a heavy chandelier?

We fit proper fixings and circuits for statement and period fittings so they’re safe and secure for the long term.

How much does a full lighting scheme cost?

A typical residential lighting scheme for an average 3-bed home costs between £1,500 and £4,500 depending on the number of circuits, fittings specified, and whether dimming or scene control is included. Commercial and heritage schemes are priced per project after a free site survey.

Do you design the scheme or just install what I choose?

Either. We can take your own fitting selections and install them, work from an interior designer's lighting plan, or design a full scheme ourselves including fitting schedules, colour temperatures, dimming strategy and scene programming. Whatever suits.

Can you work on listed or period properties?

Yes. We work regularly on listed buildings, barn conversions and period homes across Mid Somerset. We rewire original fittings, hide modern LED drivers inside traditional lanterns, and liaise with conservation officers where heritage consent is needed.

What control systems do you install?

We install Philips Hue smart bulbs/strips and DALI-2 broadcast on commercial sites. For whole-house programmable scene-control systems (Lutron, Rako, Casambi etc) we recommend a specialist integrator — we wire the dimmable circuits, they spec the control layer.

Do you certify the installation?

Yes. Every lighting install is tested to BS 7671 and issued with an Electrical Installation Certificate or Minor Works certificate. Emergency lighting systems are tested to BS 5266 and certified separately.

Lighting design

Light well, live better.

Lighting is the single most transformative electrical upgrade you can make. Good lighting changes how a room feels, how a shop sells, how a home flows from day into evening. We handle the design, the supply and the install, with every circuit certified to BS 7671.

LED downlights →  Mains GU10, IP65 bathroom, fire-rated, dimmable, from £45 + VAT.

01

Residential lighting

Kitchens, living rooms, stairwells, bedrooms, bathrooms, hallways — every room in the house needs a different approach. We work through task, ambient, accent and decorative lighting as a single scheme rather than bolting on downlights as an afterthought. Dimmable circuits, scene control, tunable white LEDs, feature pendants, under-cabinet strips and backlit mirrors. Fully compliant with IP44/IP65 requirements in bathroom zones and Part L of the Building Regulations for domestic lighting efficacy.

02

Heritage & period properties

Glastonbury, Wells, Bath, Bruton — Mid Somerset is full of listed buildings, barn conversions and period homes where the last thing you want is a grid of 65mm downlights. We restore original brass lanterns, rewire period pendants, hide modern LED drivers inside traditional fittings, and work around lath-and-plaster ceilings, timber beams and stone walls without hacking them to pieces. Where heritage permission is required we liaise with the local authority conservation officer.

03

Commercial & retail

Shops, salons, barbershops, restaurants, showrooms, offices. Commercial lighting has to do three jobs at once: make the product look right, make the staff see clearly, and run cheap. We specify track lighting (Erco, Nordlux, Astro), high-CRI LED for retail, DALI-2 broadcast control for scene switching, and CIBSE-compliant office lighting with correct lux levels at desk height. Emergency lighting to BS 5266 is designed in as standard — not bolted on at building-control sign-off.

04

Hospitality & venues

Restaurants and pubs need the light level to drop from lunch service to evening dining. Hotels need guest rooms that feel calm by day and warm by night. We install multi-scene dimming circuits and colour-temperature-tunable LED schemes that shift the room automatically from bright midday white through to warm candlelight at 1800K in the evening. For whole-house programmable scene systems (Lutron, Rako and similar) we recommend a specialist integrator — we wire the dimmable circuits, they spec the control layer.

05

Landscape & external

Driveways, gardens, water features, facade uplighting, step lights and path markers. External lighting has to survive Somerset winters — IP65 minimum, stainless or marine-grade fittings, and properly buried SWA cable rather than flex pushed through a hole. We use 24V DC transformer-fed systems for low-voltage garden installs (no earthing complexity, no RCD nuisance tripping) and mains IP67 fittings for driveways and security lighting. PIR, daylight sensor and astronomical-clock control to avoid daytime operation.

06

Smart & controlled lighting

We install Philips Hue smart-bulb systems (full house or zone-by-zone), dimmable circuits, scene-ready wiring, and DALI-2 broadcast on commercial sites. For full programmable whole-house control systems (Lutron, Rako and similar) we recommend a specialist integrator — we wire the circuits and dimmable feeds, they spec and commission the control layer. This way you get a clean BS 7671 install plus a properly-supported smart system.

07

LED strip & linear lighting

Under-cabinet, cove, stair nosing, shelf, wardrobe, plinth, pelmet, skirting. Strip lighting done badly is splotchy, green-cast, flickers, and dies after 18 months. Done right it disappears and the light appears to come from nowhere. We use CRI90+ / CRI95 tape from specified brands (Collingwood, KSR, Nordlux), run it on properly sized constant-voltage drivers, heatsink aluminium profiles, and use soft-start dimming to prevent flicker at low levels. Every run tested with a luxmeter before sign-off.

08

Emergency lighting & exit signs (BS 5266)

Required in all commercial premises, public-access buildings, HMOs, flats above shops and many larger houses. We design and install self-contained and central-battery emergency lighting systems compliant with BS 5266-1:2016: maintained and non-maintained illuminated exit signs, escape route lighting, open-area anti-panic lighting, and high-risk-task lighting. Integrated alongside BS 5839 fire alarm systems where required. Monthly function and annual 3-hour duration tests delivered as a contracted service. All certificates logged for your fire risk assessment and insurance.
