Street is known for its Clarks shoe-making heritage, and its houses were built in layers: Victorian and Edwardian terraces on the older streets, inter-war and 1960s semis, then modern estates on the edges. Each layer has its own electrical weak spots. Behind all that is a very ordinary and very practical housing stock, built in waves. The age of a house in Street tells you a fair amount about its wiring before anyone lifts a floorboard, which is why we start most conversations with the question: roughly when was it built, and has it been rewired since?
Inter-war semis that have never been rewired can still have their original cable, and older rubber-insulated cable perishes with age until the insulation crumbles at the slightest touch. If you have one of these and do not know its history, an inspection should come before any decorating. Where one has been rewired at some point, the question becomes how long ago and how well.
The 1960s semis are usually wired in PVC cable that can still test well, but the protection around it is out of date: a fuse box or an early board with no RCDs, and sometimes lighting circuits without an earth. Here a new RCBO board and a handful of targeted repairs often does the job without a rewire. The Victorian and Edwardian terraces on the older streets are the oldest houses in Street, so they are the likeliest candidates for a full rewire. People worry about having to move out, but most do not need to. Houses on the newer estates around the edge of Street rarely need rewiring. What they ask for instead is more: a car charger on the driveway, power to a garden room or shed, outdoor sockets, and sometimes a board upgrade when the original one is full. Walton sits about 1.5 miles west of Street, on the road towards Bridgwater, close enough to be part of the town's working area. If a Walton house still has a fuse box or an early board with one RCD for everything, a single fault can leave the whole house in the dark. Swapping it for an RCBO board means every circuit has its own protection, so a faulty kettle only switches off the kitchen sockets. The board is metal, surge-protected and labelled, and we test every circuit as part of the change.
Ashcott is about 3 miles west of Street, in the TA7 postcode, on the edge of the Levels near Shapwick Heath. Garden rooms, workshops and home offices in back gardens all need a proper supply. That means armoured cable from its own RCBO at the house, buried at a safe depth or clipped along a wall, with metal-clad sockets and switched lighting at the far end. A supply made from an extension lead, or flat cable run through a hedge, is exactly what an inspection codes as potentially dangerous.
Butleigh is about 3 miles south-east of Street, with the Hood Monument on the hill above it. This year we investigated a fault on an existing supply set-up at a Butleigh property and then fitted a new IP65 distribution board for an EV charger, with new meter tails and a new main earthing conductor, all certified on a Minor Works certificate. That job shows the value of looking at the supply end first: a charger is only as good as the tails, earthing and protection that feed it.
Baltonsborough lies about 4 miles east of Street on the edge of the Levels, among farms and long private driveways. Charging an electric car at the end of a long drive is entirely possible, but the cable size goes up with distance to keep voltage drop in check, and the route has to be planned around gateways, verges and anywhere vehicles cross. We use armoured cable through a duct for buried sections. At survey we also check the earthing, since some rural properties need an earth electrode for a charger.
Meare lies about 3.5 miles north-west of Street, on the Somerset Levels, with Westhay in the same parish. Where a farmhouse has an oil boiler, a solid-fuel stove or a wood burner, the room it is in should have a carbon monoxide alarm. For landlords that is a legal requirement. We fit Aico mains alarms with sealed 10-year batteries, multi-sensor heat and CO alarms in kitchens where they suit, and interlink everything so an alarm anywhere sounds throughout the house.
We cover the Street side of Somerton, about 5 miles south of the town. Houses in this direction sometimes take on large new loads, such as an AGA converted to electric or a car charger. Each needs its own dedicated circuit with RCD protection, and an older board may only protect half its circuits. Near Somerton, at West Lydford, we rearranged a half-protected board so a new 32A cooker circuit sat on the RCD side. Checking the board first avoids nasty surprises later.

If you have a driveway, a garage or parking at the side of the house, we can usually find a route, even if it is a long one in armoured cable.
