Wedmore sits on its ridge in the Somerset Levels, between the River Axe and the River Brue, with Georgian houses around The Borough and farmhouses and converted barns spread across the lower ground. Distances are the theme of a lot of the work here: long drives, outbuildings set apart from the house, and supplies that have been extended many times. The "Isle of Wedmore" is the ridge of higher ground that rises out of the Somerset Levels between the River Axe and the River Brue. The village centre is The Borough, with St Mary's church close by, and the houses around it are largely Georgian. Beyond that are Victorian villas, and further out, converted barns and working or former farmhouses.
Wedmore parish also takes in the villages of Theale and Blackford and hamlets such as Mudgley, and the land falls away towards Westhay and the Levels. We treat all of that as one patch. Whether the house is on The Borough or at the end of a farm track, the process is the same: a look at the property, a written fixed price, and certification at the end.
A Georgian house is usually tall rather than wide. That has two consequences for the electrics. First, circuits climb through three or more floors, so the routes between floors matter more than the length of any one run. Second, there are several storeys to protect, which is where smoke and heat alarms come in.

The price depends on the charger chosen, the cable run and the board. A run of that length, or any consumer unit work, adds to the price, which is why we survey first and quote in writing, charger and all. No law sets an inspection interval for a home you live in. The common guidance is roughly every ten years, and when a house is bought or sold. Meare lies on the Somerset Levels about 4.1 miles south of Wedmore, and its parish takes in Westhay. Houses on the Levels are spread out, often with farm buildings, stores and garages some way from the meter. There is no single limit, but longer runs need bigger cable to keep the voltage drop within limits, and buried or outdoor runs need armoured cable. We have run 48 metres of armoured EV cable at Wookey. The run length is one of the main things that affects the price, so we measure it at survey before quoting.
Not always. A single circuit to a small store can be protected by an RCBO at the house board. A barn or workshop with lighting, several sockets and heavy tools often benefits from a small board of its own, fed by an armoured sub-main. The survey decides which, based on the loads and the distance.
There is no law requiring alarms in an existing owner-occupied home, but on a tall house with several storeys interlinking matters: a fire on the ground floor needs to wake people at the top. We recommend mains alarms with sealed back-up batteries, interlinked wirelessly for an occupied house, with a heat alarm in the kitchen. Landlords have legal duties set out in the 2015 alarm regulations as amended in 2022.
A three-bedroom semi typically takes two and a half to three hours on site. Larger Georgian houses and properties with outbuildings take longer, because there are more circuits and boards to test. If the installation is satisfactory, the certificate is issued the same day.
