Radstock is on the A367 Fosse Way and the A362, in Bath and North East Somerset. Coal was found here in 1763, and the town became the centre of the Somerset coalfield. At its peak in 1901 the coalfield had 79 collieries. The last two pits, Kilmersdon and Writhlington, closed in September 1973. Radstock Museum, in the town’s Victorian market hall, tells that story.
The housing grew with the pits. Terraces were built for colliery families; later council housing and private estates filled the spaces between the old mining settlements. In 1933 Radstock and Midsomer Norton were merged into one urban district along with Clandown, Haydon, Westfield and Writhlington, which is why it is hard to tell where one place ends and the next begins.
For an electrician, that history means variety. One street can have a terrace with wiring from several different decades, a 1970s house with its original board, and a new home with a modern RCBO consumer unit already in place.
Older terraces are where we find the most problems: boards with no RCD protection, missing bonding to gas and water pipes, lighting circuits without an earth, and kitchens and bathrooms added onto circuits that were never designed for them. Those are fixed with a new board, targeted circuit work, or a full rewire, depending on what the testing shows.
Post-war and 1970s houses usually have sound PVC wiring but original boards with rewireable fuses. A new RCBO board is often the main job. Newer houses need little beyond extra circuits for EV chargers, garden rooms and outside power.

Writhlington. Part of the old Norton Radstock district, Writhlington had one of the coalfield’s longest-working pits: Upper Writhlington ran from 1805, and Writhlington was one of the last two to close in 1973. The old spoil heap is now a Site of Special Scientific Interest known for insect fossils. Housing ranges from older cottages to newer estates, and we cover the whole village for board changes, EICRs and EV chargers.
Westfield. Strung along the Fosse Way between Radstock and Midsomer Norton, Westfield has long rows of terraced miners’ cottages built in the 19th and early 20th centuries, and large estates built on both sides of the road in the 1970s. Older terraces more often need rewires and bonding; estate houses of that age more often need a new board.
Kilmersdon. A small village between Radstock and Frome on the B3139, recorded in the Domesday Book and home to a Grade I church. Its colliery, opened in 1875, was one of the last two in the coalfield. Where houses are older and stone-built, we plan cable routes with care.
Peasedown St John. About two miles north-east of Radstock, Peasedown grew around Braysdown colliery and then expanded with large housing developments in the 1960s, 1970s and late 1990s. See our Peasedown St John page.
Camerton. Beside the Fosse Way, Camerton’s New Colliery closed in 1950 and its spoil tip, Camerton Batch, is now a local nature reserve. The village has a Grade I 15th-century church and older cottages where an EICR is a sensible first step before any other work.
Dunkerton. Between Radstock and Bath, about four miles north-east of the town, Dunkerton had a colliery in the early 20th century. Homes with off-road space suit EV chargers, and older properties benefit from a board upgrade where the existing one lacks RCD protection.
Wellow. A conservation-area village on the Wellow Brook with a Grade I church and the Neolithic Stoney Littleton Long Barrow nearby. Stone houses and listed buildings mean careful routes, minimal chasing and discreet alarm positions.
Timsbury. North of Radstock, Timsbury was surrounded by collieries and its core became a conservation area in 1978. See our Timsbury page.
Farmborough. Straddling the A39 and A368, six miles south-west of Bath, Farmborough has historic links to the coalfield and a 15th-century church. Where village houses have garages and outbuildings on long supplies, we include those circuits in testing.
