Most of the houses on the estates around Midsomer Norton have a drive or a garage, which makes them good candidates for a home charger. The questions we answer on the survey are where the charger goes, how the cable gets there from the consumer unit, and whether the supply can carry the extra load.
Garage installs are the most common. If the consumer unit is in the garage, the run can be short and simple. If the board is in the hall and the garage is integral, we route the cable through the house, usually through the ceiling void or along a skirting in trunking. If the garage is detached, an armoured cable goes underground or along a wall.
Each charger is on its own circuit with a Type A RCBO. BS 7671 requires each charge point to have its own 30 mA RCD plus DC fault protection, for example a Type B RCD, or a Type A RCD with a 6 mA DC detection device. The chargers we fit have that DC detection built in.
Older houses may have a 60 amp main fuse; newer ones usually 80 or 100 amps. A 7kW charger running at the same time as an electric shower and an oven can push a smaller supply close to its limit, so we look at your main fuse and the big loads in the house. Where it is tight, we fit a charger with load management, which measures the incoming current and turns the charger down when the house needs the power.
If your house still has an older board, it may not have space for another circuit. We price the board change as a separate line so you can decide.
Older terraces near the High Street often front onto the road with no off-street parking. A cable across the pavement is not an option, so a home charger only works where there is private parking beside the house.

Every installation is priced individually. The charger you choose, the cable route from the board to the drive or garage, and any work needed at the board all affect the price. The survey confirms the route and the charger, then you get a fixed written quote that includes the charger.
