If your house was last rewired in the 1970s or 1980s, the cable is PVC and often still tests well. When it does, a full rewire is money you do not need to spend. The weak points are usually elsewhere: an old board, no RCD protection, too few sockets, lighting circuits without an earth, or a kitchen that has outgrown its circuit.
So we start with testing. If the insulation readings are good and the earths are continuous, we recommend a new board and targeted work: extra circuits for the kitchen, more sockets, earthed lighting where it is missing. If the readings are poor, or the cable is the older rubber-insulated type, a full rewire is the sensible route.
A partial rewire is common on houses where an extension or loft conversion was done properly and the rest of the house was not. We rewire the old part and keep the newer circuits after testing them.
The estates built either side of the Fosse Way in the 1970s are houses of their time: typically cavity walls, timber upper floors and accessible lofts. That makes them quicker to rewire than solid-wall cottages: cables drop down cavities or behind dry lining, and upstairs circuits run in the loft.
Ground floors in houses of that age are often solid concrete, so ground-floor sockets are fed from above, down the walls, rather than under the floor. We plan the socket positions to avoid long chases where possible.
Older stone terraces near the centre, in Welton and along the Fosse Way are different. Solid walls, uneven floors and earlier alterations mean more chasing and more care. We price the two very differently, which is why we survey before quoting.
