Wedmore sits on its ridge in the Somerset Levels, between the Axe and the Brue, and plenty of homes here have room: drives, yards, barns and garages set back from the house. That is good news for charging a car, but it often means a long cable between the meter and wherever the car is parked. This page explains how we plan, install and price that kind of run.
Around The Borough and near St Mary's church, the Georgian houses sit close together and close to the road, so parking, if there is any, tends to be at the back. Victorian villas further out usually have a drive and a side wall that suits a charger. Out towards Theale, Blackford and Mudgley, and in the Westhay direction, homes are more often farmhouses and converted barns, where the car may live in a cart shed or by a garage some way from the house.
Each of those means a different cable route, and the route is what drives most of the cost.
No two installs here are the same. The price depends on the charger you choose, the length of the run, including any extra armoured cable, duct and far-end enclosure out to a barn or garage, and whether the board is fit for a charger. We never charge by the hour for an installation: you get one fixed, written price per job after the survey, charger and all.
We walk the route with you at survey and agree three things: where the cable leaves the house, the line it takes across your ground, and where it comes up at the charger. Lawns, gravel, flower beds, drains and anything else already buried all get talked about before a trench is opened. Who digs the trench is agreed at the same time, and is spelled out in the written price.
Before the trench is backfilled, take a few photos with something in shot for scale. Years from now, when someone wants to plant a tree or put in a fence post, you will know where the cable runs.
Many properties take their earth from the supply company's cable. For a charge point outdoors, especially one well away from the house, that arrangement has to be checked properly, and some properties need an earth electrode at the charge point. We test the earthing at survey and include an electrode in the price if it is needed. The chargers we fit also have built-in 6 mA DC fault detection, and every charger is on its own circuit with a Type A RCBO.
Neither is in Wedmore itself, but both show the long-run and supply work that rural charge points involve.
One charge point job this year was at Wookey, about five miles east of Wedmore, and it is a fair picture of a long-run install. The charger, a Hypervolt 7.4kW, sat 48 metres from the house. A new dedicated 32A circuit fed an outdoor IP65 enclosure holding a 40A Type A RCBO and a Type 2 SPD. The armoured EV cable carried its own data cable and went through a duct along a garden route. The DNO was notified and confirmed the connection, and the work was certified on an EIC and notified under Part P.
Distance adds to the work on any job like that. The survey is where we measure the run and put it in a fixed written quote.
The quote covers the charger, the dedicated circuit, cabling, fitting and certification. We fit Ohme, Hypervolt, Zappi or Andersen, usually at 7.4kW. Long runs and board work are included once measured, and the app is set up on your phone at handover.

That is agreed at survey and written into the price. If you would rather arrange the digging yourself, perhaps with someone local who has a digger, we give you the route and depth we need and look at the trench before the cable goes in. Either way, we lay, connect and test the cable ourselves.
