The consumer unit (fuse box, fuse board) is where every circuit in the house starts. Replacing it is the single change that does the most for electrical safety in an older home, because a modern board adds residual current protection to every circuit and surge protection for the supply. It is also the job we are most often asked to price after an EICR in Bath, and the one buyers' surveyors flag.
Our standard is simple. Every board we fit is an RCBO board: one main switch and an individual RCBO protecting each circuit, in a non-combustible metal enclosure. Since January 2016 new domestic boards have had to be non-combustible, so if yours is plastic and fitted before then, it is out of step with current practice even if it still works. We never fit split-load or dual-RCD boards, where one fault can take out half the house.
Board position affects price as much as circuit count, and Bath has some awkward ones. In Georgian townhouses the meter and board are often in the basement or in a vault under the front steps, sometimes damp, sometimes shared with the neighbouring building's supply. In converted flats the meters are commonly grouped in a cupboard in the communal hall, with each flat's tails running up through the building to a board inside the flat. In post-war houses in Southdown, Twerton and Odd Down the board is usually under the stairs or in a hall cupboard and the job is straightforward.
Before we price, we check three things: that the supply can be isolated safely (there should be an isolator switch after the meter), that the meter tails are adequate (we replace them with 25 mm² flexible tails where needed), and that the main earth and bonding are in place. If any of these need work, it goes on the quote as its own line.

We don't publish a price list, because no two boards are the same. You get a fixed written quote once we have seen the existing board, in person or from clear photos. Faults found on existing circuits, tails, bonding or an awkward board position are quoted as separate lines so you can see exactly what you are paying for.
If you are in a listed building, a like-for-like board change in the same position is normally straightforward; moving the board or running new cables through historic fabric is a different matter, covered on our heritage rewires page.
Every board change is priced individually. The price depends on how many circuits you have, where the board sits, whether the meter tails and main earth need upgrading, and whether any circuit fails its tests on the day. You get a fixed written price after we have seen the existing board, in person or from clear photos.
Most domestic board changes in Bath are done in a day, with the supply off for most of that day while the old board comes out and each circuit is tested onto the new one. We agree a start time with you, keep the fridge and freezer closed, and restore circuits as soon as they pass.
An RCBO board only: a main switch, a surge protection device where it is needed, and an individual RCBO for every circuit, in a metal (non-combustible) enclosure. If one circuit develops a fault, only that circuit goes off. We do not fit split-load or dual-RCD boards.
Old fuse boxes and MCB-only boards have no residual current protection, so they never notice small earth leakage or a neutral shared between two circuits. RCBOs do. We test every circuit before the change and tell you about any fault we find, so it is fixed as part of the job rather than discovered at bedtime.
Not always. If the existing board is sound, has a spare way and can take the right protective device, we add the circuit to it. If it is an old fuse box, a plastic unit or full, the charger or shower is the moment to replace it. Every EV charger circuit we install is protected by a Type A RCBO.
Very often, because the most common C2 code on older Bath installations is missing RCD protection, and a new RCBO board deals with it. Any other coded items are quoted alongside, then we re-test and issue the paperwork you need to show the remedial work has been done.
