In a modern house the consumer unit goes in the hall cupboard and nobody thinks about it again. In a lot of Frome houses it is not that simple. The meter may be in a cellar, a lobby or an outside box set into a stone wall. The existing board may be fixed to panelling or a wall that matters. The tails from the meter may run across a historic surface.
So we start by agreeing where the new board should go. Sometimes that is the same spot. The board itself is always the same type: a metal consumer unit with a double-pole main switch and a Type A RCBO on every circuit. No split-load, no shared RCDs. Each circuit is protected on its own, so a fault in one room does not plunge the whole house into darkness.
The restored houses in the Trinity area and the older streets around the centre often have boards fitted during renovations in the 1980s and 1990s. Those are now old enough to lack RCD protection on some circuits, and many have rewireable fuses or early miniature circuit breakers.
Mill and warehouse conversions sometimes keep a three-phase supply from their industrial past. Where that feeds individual flats or units, a three-phase distribution board with RCBO protection per circuit may be the right answer. We price those separately.
Newer homes on the edges of town, including the developments on former industrial sites, usually already have modern boards. If yours does, we will tell you a change is not needed, and quote for whatever you actually need, such as a circuit for a car charger.
Testing before and after, certification and Building Control notification are all part of the price.
