Most rewiring work in Frome is in older houses, and the main job is planning the routes. A cable has to get from the board to every socket, switch and light. In a modern house that means chasing walls. In a house with lime plaster, original cornices, panelled walls or exposed stone, chasing everything is the wrong approach.
We start in the loft and under the floors. Upstairs circuits can usually be run in the roof space and dropped down inside partitions. Ground-floor circuits can often be run under suspended floors, or from a cellar. Where a cable has to rise up a solid wall, we look for a cupboard, the side of a chimney breast, or behind a skirting, before we pick up a chasing tool.
Where a wall is too precious to cut, surface options exist: neat painted conduit, or accessories mounted on the skirting. We discuss them with you rather than decide for you.
Frome grew on the wool and cloth trade, and its centre has houses from the 16th century onwards, many of them listed. The Trinity area has small houses from the late 17th and early 18th centuries, restored in the early 1980s. Victorian and Edwardian terraces fill the streets running out from the centre. Each type has its own construction, and its own good and bad routes for cable.
In the restored Trinity houses the 1980s wiring is now around forty years old and often lacks earths on lighting circuits or RCD protection, which can point towards a rewire. In Victorian terraces the floors are usually suspended timber, which makes ground-floor routes easier.
If your house is listed, alterations that affect its character may need listed building consent from Somerset Council.
